Dad's 60th Birthday Present

First, I'm obviously not posting with the frequency I'd like and a lot of my craft supplies are packed up or just not quite organized yet so I'm pulling pictures and projects from the archives. Here's a project I actually loved, but I was holding on to it because I didn't want to show it until I'd given it to my dad (last November) and so somehow it just stayed in the drafts section... so it works perfectly for sharing now. Never mind that it's a project I made nearly a year ago...

This was made for my dad's 60th birthday, in November 2011. It's not one of my cheapest or easiest, but it definitely made a statement and I think the family liked it! It was also a project that I needed lots of help from the boyfriend for (and that required my little sketchbook and some serious sketching and mathematical calculations for buying supplies... but that might be my own personality quirk rather than something necessary for the project)!

Before I show it to you, I have to give a shoutout and huge thanks to Kami at No Biggie for the inspiration of the photo collage she had for her parents and their 40th anniversary party. Her project looked so awesome, I had to give this a try!

  • 12 canvases (all canvas stretched on the wooden frame) - each measuring 9" x 12" (we bought 2-packs of 6)
  • Spray paint (I used 2 cans of Krylon Peekaboo Blue with the Gloss finish)
  • Hinges (this is what we needed math for - we used some square-ish and rectangular ones that required either 2 or 4 screws), drill
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Lots of photos
  • Pencil + large paper or posterboard + scissors/paper trimmer
  • Tablecloth/cardboard (something to protect your giant canvas once assembled and something to lay it on to spray paint)

After the boyfriend and I did our math to figure out roughly how many hinges we needed and how many canvases, he put together our canvases while I collected photos and ordered them.

The boyfriend did most of this work in putting together the canvases and it was definitely not an easy task. If you have lots of questions, I can ask him, but he was of the opinion that these pictures can show you anything you might need to know, so let's hope that's true...

The 2-screw rectangular-ish hinges were mostly used on the outside of the canvases (you'll see that in a few pics) and on the sides of the canvases rather than at corners or joints.

This is the ful monster once we had it put together - it's on the kitchen table because it's that enormous. You can see the various hinges everywhere...

Krylon is amazing and we actually only needed about a can and a half to cover the canvas and all sides of it (and cover it really well). This is the color we used... my parents have lots of blue in their house so that's why we went with this one.

This was back in October (when we were painting), thus the leaves everywhere... 2 coats really covered the mega-canvas!

It definitely looked glossy...

We covered the edges too and here's a view of the hinge on the outside of the canvases. I painted those too as I covered the sides.

Once the paint was dry, I brought the canvas inside and it was time to figure out how to shape the "60." I had freezer paper and that was basically the biggest paper I had so I taped some of it together and drew my big "6" and then a big "0" on another piece. You can use posterboard or a big roll of butcher paper if you have it... this is just what I had on hand.

I then cut out my big "6."

I just kind of kept that paper "6" around and looked at it as I picked out the photos to use and played around with the layout. You could definitely go without a template or pattern like this, but it just made me feel better.

I also tried to use adhesive squares and tape and gluesticks, but none of that would hold the photos so I ended up going with hot glue. It was definitely my last choice, but it actually didn't seem to mess up the photos at all...

I first got the "6" done and then the "0". The second digit was easier somehow, but neither was too challenging because I kind of stuck to the digital clock-type font/layout for the numbers.

And ta da! A "60" made out of photos of friends and family, pets and vacations... lots of fun stuff!

I didn't love the result as much as I'd hoped at least right away, but then my family seemed to love it so I sort of started to like it a bit more...

And here it is up on the fireplace at my parents' house!

I'm linking up to some of my favorite parties!

Organizing Fever

Since we've moved into the Maryland house, I've been all about the organizing... we have lots more space, furniture, rooms now... just tons of stuff! So I've been searching out inspiration from a wide variety of sources. My DIY organizing board on Pinterest has been getting a workout and I've been reading my fave organizing blogs like a crazy gal.

Because I still don't have my act together to post pictures of my little organizing projects, I figured I'd share some of my favorite organizing blogs with you AND ask for a few recommendations. So, here are some of my favorites... (and unlike a lot of my other posts, I actually took my time and linked the pictures to the blog sites so you can click the pictures to go directly to the awesomeness)!

IHeart Organizing

So there you go - my favorite organizing blogs! Most are obviously pretty organizing focused and hopefully the others aren't offended that I consider them "organizing blogs," but they're just some of my favorite places for organizing inspiration! (If you're one of those bloggers, I hope you're flattered - it's seriously that I just think you're awesome!)

(I also read the "usual suspects" including Better Homes and Gardens and Real Simple, but I didn't try to include blog buttons for them here.)

So now that you've seen some of my favorites, what are some of YOUR loves for organizing ideas and inspiration? I'm definitely drawn to blogs with pretty pictures and projects as well as at least a few tips and ideas that I can re-create on the cheap. The giant lists of tips with no pictures aren't my style, nor are too many videos (that don't have the important stuff spelled out somewhere) or the ones that are focused on selling stuff or reviewing stuff/making money for the blogger or all focused on kids. I know, the standards are kind of high. But I'm seriously hoping you guys have some ideas because I just need more great ones! So... inspiration for organization?
