My Guest Post at Destination: Craft!

I'm SOOOO excited to be able to direct you over to Destination: Craft for my guest post (today!) that's part of an AMAZING series called "Tips from the Best: How to Grow Your Blog" (see super-cute logo below)!

I was incredibly flattered that Kathryn asked me to participate and I think I actually came up with some helpful tips that you haven't seen here already, a collection I call My Favorite Mistakes... so check it out here!

UNC Wreath

While the traveling and moving insanity continues, I dug this post/project out of the "archives" (okay, my drafts) to share with you... I made it awhile ago and then didn't have all the pictures edited and ready, but I've got it under control now and ta da! Hope you enjoy it as you gear up for football season (WOHOOOOO)!

I made this wreath for my cousins who are both HUGE University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill fans. They both went there for undergrad and did athletic training/physical therapy-type stuff so they worked with a bunch of the UNC teams and went to more games than I can imagine. So this Chrismukkah present was kind of a no-brainer for me... although I did have some trouble trying to think up how to make this work because I knew I had to get just the right shade of tarheel blue (or be VERY close).

Unfortunately, I also didn't do the best job taking pictures of this wreath because it was made in the supreme craziness of Chrismukkah preparation and gift making and I could barely function, let alone remember to take pictures! But I'll do my best to show you how I made it...
Here's what you'll need...

  • Straw wreath form
  • Lots of one color yarn for the main part of the wreath, a little bit for making the "X"s
  • Felt (just some scraps for the triangles)
  • Cardstock letters
  • Mod Podge (the regular glossy kind) + paintbrush
  • Baker's twine (just a bit) + needle
  • Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon (for hanging the wreath)
  • Glitter
  • Small logos printed out
  • Hot glue gun + glue
First I wrapped the whole wreath in my tarheel blue yarn.

Then, I just wrapped the white around in little "X"s. Basically, you wrap it diagonally one way and then go back and wrap the other way. I had some good pictures when I showed you all how to do this as part of the argyle wreath tutorial here.

Then, I just tied some ribbon through the yarn on the back of the wreath and then tied some longer ribbon through that (like I do on almost all of my wreaths) and added a bow to it...

Then, I downloaded a bunch of the college logos from the internet (maybe even the college's website where they have the standards for the logos and the downloadable versions you can get) and printed them out and cut them out. I wasn't sure how I was going to make sure they lasted in case my cousins wanted to put the wreath outside, but then I thought of my favorite Mod Podge Dimensional Magic! I love how they makes things kind of look like they're all resin-y and protected and I figured it made it weatherproof enough for a wreath (that wasn't going to be facing weather like a deck would be) and so I covered the logos with Dimensional Magic. I let that dry and added another coat. I think I added a third too because I'm paranoid.

While I was waiting for those to dry, I covered the scrapbook/cardstock letters that I punched out (they were weird die-cuts form some kind of scrapbooking kit I had) and covered those with Mod Podge and sprinkled glitter on them. Then, I coated them with more of the regular Mod Podge so that they'd be protected too.

While that was drying, I cut out the felt triangles and grabbed my baker's twine and needle and sewed them together. When the letters and logos were dry, I glued them onto the felt triangles (there are better pictures and descriptions here with my Duke wreath tutorial). Then, I tied the edges of the twine around the wreath and ta da!

Time to admire your work! I hung it up on my door before we wrapped it up and I kind of love it.

It's simpler than the other college wreaths I made (the Duke one and the Clemson one - oddly everyone is in ACC country for now!), but I just think it looks so pretty like this! And my cousin said she thinks this might be going in her office so I guess it's a hit!

(Oh and I'm proud to say that I only bought the blue yarn for this one - I had everything else on hand... that's why this is actually a slightly smaller wreath than most of the others I've made recently... I bought small ones a million years ago and then I haven't seen any larger 14" ones. But I'm pretty impressed with myself for this creativity and using what I had!)

Recent Travels

One of the new parts of this job is that I'm traveling. A lot. Or at least enough to disrupt my usual blog plans and entries and posts. So I know I've been slacking and I feel bad, but I thought I'd update you on where I've been recently... or at least for the past week and until late tonight/tomorrow morning when I journey back to Maryland. I'm in upstate New York!

I'm up by the asterisk on the map there. And I got the map here (and edited with PicMonkey)!

This little postcard was in my hotel room here and I loved it!

I'm on my way back to the DMV now (apparently some people call the Maryland-DC-Virginia area the "DMV" which was news to me) and I swear I'll do my best to be a better blogger. Or at least share some fun pictures of the travels and house or something! Until then, I'm returning to the nomadic traveler life!

Guest Post: Brie of Breezy Pink Daisies

Yesterday you saw her answers to the crafty questions and today Brie is back to share a wonderful tutorial with us. Seriously, when I saw that this dealt with organizing jewelry, I was CRAZY excited because I collect it almost as much as I save crafty ideas on Pinterest. But before we get into my issues, I'll turn it over to Brie...

I'm so excited to be sharing my necklace display with you all! Thanks Mel, for having me over! :)

So, let's start with a before picture just so you understand how badly I needed a new way to organize my necklaces. Yes, I had them on a hanger. Not pretty. But no worries, I did something about it!

Photobucket
I had these frames given to me. I wasn't a fan of the artwork, so I had no problem covering it up! However, it was very time consuming to get the artwork out since it was stapled in...but I succeeded, with just a little broken glass.

Photobucket
I wanted to use some cute scrapbook paper for the background but my frame was too large, so I used some extra contact paper that I had picked up from the dollar store! All I did was stick the contact paper on the back of the artwork - so easy!
PhotobucketPhotobucket
I added some "bling" to a few clear thumbtacks to make them look, well, not so much like thumbtacks and more like something you would display necklaces on!

Photobucket
So back to holding my necklaces, I pushed the thumbtacks right in - and then went past the cardboard, but it works out because it sits that far off the wall anyway.
Photobucket
I'm loving my blingy thumbtacks! And my necklaces - maybe now that they are displayed so pretty I'll wear them more often! :)
Let's break down the price:
  • Frame: gifted (FREE!)
  • Contact paper: from the Dollar Tree - leftover from a previous project (I used about 1/5 of a full roll - so $.20)
  • Clear Thumbtacks: from Hobby Lobby $1.20
  • Jewels: from Hobby Lobby - leftover from wedding projects (the amount I used - maybe $.30)
  • Hot Glue: I didn't even have to put a new stick in (maybe $.05)
Total cost: $1.75!!!
Thanks again for having me over here! Hopefully I inspired some of you! I would love to see what you use to display your necklaces, especially if I helped you come up with something! :)

A HUGE thanks to Brie for sharing so much with us all! Be sure to check out her projects at Breezy Pink Daisies!

Crafty Interview: Brie of Breezy Pink Daisies

I want to introduce you to Brie of Breezy Pink Daisies who has agreed to be here today and tomorrow for the interview and the tutorial! I like the interview and Brie did too so we have that today and you should come back tomorrow to check out her tutorial! I actually didn't discover Brie's blog until relatively recently, but I love it and if you haven't discovered it, I hope you go check it out now because it is so fun and bright (as if you couldn't tell from her button)!

For now, check out her answers to the crafty questions...

When and how did you start being crafty?
I've always enjoyed crafting! I remember being in about the 3rd grade and my neighbor and I would make necklaces, beady buddies, and pot holders...and we went door to door trying to sell our creations! haha

When did you start blogging about your craftiness and why?
I just hooked this past summer looking through other crafty fun blogs and decided I wanted to get in on the fun!

What's your favorite project (of everything you've made)?
Oh, this is a tricky one. I just made a
camera bag / purse for my DSLR camera and I love it! (Just to clarify, I didn't actually make the purse, I just made the purse into a camera bag) Makes me want to use my camera more :)

What's your favorite crafty material or medium?
My new favorite - Armor Etch! Soon I'm pretty sure that every glass dish I own will be etched :)

What's the biggest challenge you face(d) in blogging?
Not blogging enough or getting discouraged looking at other amazing blogs. I'm trying to not compare myself (aka my blog) to others and just enjoy what I have!

When you don't feel particularly crafty, what do you do to find inspiration?
Pinterest! But of course, who doesn't?! :) Hobby Lobby is another one of my favorite places when looking for something crafty to do.

How do you organize your craft supplies?
I have a little rolling tote thing I store a lot of my stuff in...and in half of
our TV stand - that way it's always close by!

How do you organize (remember, find) tutorials and posts online that you like?
Again, pinterest!

What's your best tip for new bloggers?
Make friends! Participate in blog hops and leave comments on the blogs you visit.

What are some things you're loving right now (crafty or not)?
SUMMER! I'm a teacher so I'm enjoying my break, even though I'm teaching summer school - it's a whole lot easier than the regular school year!

Are you married? A mom? To human or fur-babies or both? (Anything else?)
I am married! We just had our one year anniversary in June. So crazy that an entire YEAR has gone by already. I love him :) My husband is truly my best friend and I love that we get to spend our lives together. We have been renting and now are just beginning the process of looking for a house to buy - scary, but exciting!

What area of the country (or world) do you live in?
Chicagoland area.

What question do you wish I asked (and please answer it)?!
Hm, I guess this would be kinda a boring question, but one I want to answer - What's your job? Well, I'm a special education teacher to a multi-needs high school population. I have about eight students and two aides. This is my first year teaching and I LOVE it! I love working with my students and figuring out how to help them reach their fullest potential. We work on fun things like having conversations, cooking (including smoothie making - my favorite), shopping, counting money, using google/the internet, and everything else that they need to be successful  in life.

A big thanks to Brie for answering the questions and being patient with me on this - I can't wait to share her tutorial with you guys tomorrow! Don't forget to go visit her at Breezy Pink Daisies before you come back here tomorrow!

Travel Pics: Aurora, Colorado

I had a blast on my trip to Aurora, Colorado. That state was just INSANELY GORGEOUS and I definitely want to live there at some point in my life. Before I head off on my next trip, I figured I should get these pictures posted... Translation: Be prepared for quite a few pictures here...

My super-pretty hotel room... with lots of navy and lime (my favorite color combination)!

We drove around a bit to get to where we were working and staying and various places to eat so there are a few "road pics," but I just LOVED the landscape out there...

This is around where we were actually working most days...

This may not be all that fascinating to many of you, but I thought it was AMAZING... out in CO, you can see the actual rays of sunshine through clouds. It happened several times and was just GORGEOUS. I wish I'd had my real camera to capture it, but I tried to put together some good pics for you in case you hadn't seen this...

I also just LOVED the clouds out there and understand how people can call this part of the country "Big Sky" country... the sky just looked bigger out there and the clouds more incredible! (Also, I got pretty excited about this digital washi tape... excuse my obvious excitement here...)

One of the most amazing things to me were the little rabbits everywhere. While walking to dinner once, this little guy just sat there near me. I could have touched him he was so close... but I just took this picture and decided not to tempt fate. But he was so cute!

I had some AWESOME food too... including this yummy BBQ sandwich, corn bread muffins, baked potato, and more... so yummy!

I also saw these origami elephants at a Mexican restaurant. The guy working there said his sister made them because their mom loves elephants. I just love them and I snapped this little picture - so cute! (It doesn't hurt that Max LOVES elephants!)

One of the big reasons I LOVED Colorado was the many, many nice people! I got this message from the woman in housekeeping when I came back one day. There were also two waitresses at the BBQ restaurant near the hotel that were just awesome and I'd LOVE to have gotten to hang out with... they were so fun and so sweet!

And of course the wildflowers... these were just growing in random places and looking gorgeous and perking up the landscape.

In summary: Colorado gets two VERY enthusiastic thumbs up from me. Definitely one of my new favorite places!

Fabric Bow Bookmarks

I made the fabric flower frame for the fifth event of the Bloggy Olympics, but I messed around with lots of fabric while trying to figure out what I wanted to share and these are something fun I found at How About Orange and I made them pretty easily with stuff I already owned (and you own now if you made the frame)!

Full credit for everything goes to Jessica Jones (who is a crazy genius and you should be reading her blog if you aren't already) who shared this tutorial for bow tie paper clipsHer tutorial is so good that I'm not going to try to repeat it or re-do it, but I did want to show you how my little gems turned out and what I used because I made one little alteration.

First, I randomly had this floral wire from Walmart and that's what I used.

But my alteration involved excluding the wire and that seemed to work out very well!

I used the fabric scraps that I had stiffened for the fabric frame (remember, I told you that you already had the supplies if you made the frame)...

I had leftover stiffened fabric that I just used to make into bows and then attached to the paper clips (which you probably have around somewhere) and ta da!

I actually only used wire on a couple of the bows and you can't even tell which ones. The ones without wire also seemed a bit more flexible... or at least I moved them around and played with them a bit more and they seemed fine.

You can use these as bookmarks/page markers or extra fancy paper clips. No fraying because you used stiffened fabric! They take about five minutes or less to create and they're so cute - I love them!

An awesome, super-cheap, super-quick craft using stuff you probably already have!

I'll be linking this up at some of my favorite linky parties...
