DIY Car Essentials Box

This tutorial/post is about one of my greatest ideas to date (seriously, I LOVE this thing and so does Mr. Crafty Scientist)... The Car Essentials Box.

Basically, Mr. Crafty Scientist got annoyed one day when we didn't have nail clippers for a hang nail he had and then he was annoyed that I ran out of the flossers I carry in my purse. But then I got the idea for this little creation and it's been AWESOME. Seriously, one of my best projects/inventions/ideas ever. More than 6 months later and we are definitely still using them... I made one for each of our cars, but had the Jeep Essentials box handy for taking pictures so that's what's here.

Supplies
  • Pencil box ($1 for each at A.C. Moore)
  • Vinyl + Silhouette
  • The "essentials" (more on that later)

Instructions
I started with the pencil boxes that I got for a buck each at A.C. Moore. Then I basically just cut out the text "Jeep Essentials" (twice) using my Silhouette Cameo and then I made the little Jeep icon and cut that out too.

There's the little text on the front cover and then you open the box...

And the larger text and Jeep icon/silhouette is on the bottom of the box. I just put it on the inside of the bottom of the box and the outside of the top of the box. I wasn't too worried about peeling or getting too distressed and so far (maybe 6 months later... not that it took me awhile to get pictures together or anything...), it hasn't been a problem.

I was pretty pleased with myself and took a few more pictures...

Then it was time for the next fun part - filling up the box with all of our essentials! We live in the DC area and our cars end up parked outside most of the time and it's pretty hot so everything had to be melt-proof (or at least, very melt-resistant), so while we want lip balm or chapstick, we haven't found one that hasn't liquified or gotten disgusting... but maybe you can find some for your box!

Here's what's in our box here:

1. tissues (mini pack of Kleenex from the Target dollar section)
2. tummy medicines (little Ziploc bag for jewelry that has Gax-X, Pepto Bismal, and Imodium)
3. pain medicines (another mini jewelry bag with Ibuprofen/ Tylenol/ Advil)
4. mouthwash (Scope)
5. cotton swabs (Q-tips)
6. Neosporin/ some kind of First Aid ointment for cuts
7. hand lotion
8. nail files/ emery boards
9. Band-Aids
10. nail clippers
11. antibacterial gel

We also keep a bottle of water in the car (most of the time) for the pills and the boxes also contain flosser picks (a bunch for a dollar at the dollar store). Our box also has a car charger for our phones (and an adapter so one will work for both of our phones). We also had clear nail polish in the box and at some point, I had a mini lint roller that has since disappeared and a variety of other things that have migrated to the glove compartment (for reasons beyond my knowledge)...

This is the big list I put together with all of our essentials listed (those in the picture and not pictured) and some ideas for new additions...

There you have it - a quick box you can assemble for almost nothing, in less than an hour, and it's helped us out so many times, it's crazy!

As always, I'd love to see one if you make it and I'll be linking up to some of my favorite parties...

Confetti Shot Glasses

I saw these awesome Anthro-knockoff glasses with the painted confetti-style dots from It All Started With Paint and Radical Possibility and I wanted to do something with paint dots. When I saw these plain shot glasses at Target's dollar spot, it was ON. Here's what I did...

Supplies
  • Plain shot glasses (from the Target dollar spot)
  • Martha Stewart paints
  • Bamboo skewers (with one flat end)

Instructions
I used the flat end of the bamboo skewers and dipped them into the Martha Stewart paints. I made a lot of dots on the bottom and then just spaced them out as I got closer to the edge/lid.

I didn't have too many different colors of the Martha Stewart paint (which is good for glass, which is why I used it) and luckily, they were the darker colors so I just added some white paint to one color, then added some dots with that lighter color and repeated the process...

Then, just let them dry and voila! Anthro-knockoff-style shot glasses! I didn't bake them and so far, they've held up just fine to soap and hot water.
