Ombre Strawberry Planter

We just got back from a fabulous vacation in the Outer Banks (you might have seen a photo or 40 on my Instagram feed - @craftyscientist and I plan to share more at some point), but I wanted to share something I mentioned awhile back...

Remember when I said I'd share one more painted planter project (when I shared the other color blocked painted planters)? It was kind of awhile ago.

But I thought I'd share it now because I finally got most of my pictures together!

I painted the whole thing with a flat white paint.

Then I taped off the sections according to the imprinted lines that were already marked on the planter... and used quite a bit of painter's tape!

The three greens on the left are the ones I used for this planter (the Jade color was used on the other planters I posted here). Somehow I already owned the ombre green spectrum so that's what I went with!

I had bought some Krylon Glitter Blast paint in this sour apple color - my favorite color! - and thought this would be a perfect top to the planter... but this is what it looked like... no matter how many coats I did or how much I shook the can.

It was just a gross, ugly mess. I haven't tried to use that color for anything else and I ended up just covering the glitter with a lighter green. Maybe I'll try again with something else, but I just don't know what went wrong (the other paints worked, it wasn't that hot at the time, etc.).

And ta da! Time to plant! There are some imperfections still (it's a challenge to get painter's tape to adhere perfectly on a shape like this... or it was for me!), but I'm still a big fan!

The strawberry plants were flourishing, but then some squirrels, caterpillars, a neighbor's cat, deer, a raccoon, and an opossum decided to "investigate" and with the big rains... well, it's looking a little less lush now, but I'm hopeful it can survive!

The whole collection of color blocked painted planters!

I'll be sharing at some fun parties...

Durham, NC: Awesomely Gorgeous

This past weekend Mr. Crafty Scientist and I took an awesome, insanely quick (we arrived around 2:30am Friday morning and left Saturday around 7pm) trip to Durham, NC to see my sister get her white coat (wohoo! so proud and huge congrats to her!). I like to stick to the pretty scenery and "stuff" rather than people so I thought I'd share some photos of the spectacular Duke campus and our hotel room which had so many pretty touches, I couldn't stop taking pictures...

I thought I was just in love with the big mirror, but then I realized I LOVED the curtains, which spanned the whole back wall, from floor to ceiling.

Plus, there was super-pretty texture in the form of this nailhead headboard with the puffy fabric (obviously, I'm a design expert with that description, but it totally reminds me of what might be my most favorite room/large makeover project ever - this nailhead headboard and wall from sarah m. dorsey designs) and the almost charcoal flannel-looking walls AND the semi-polished/semi-matte silver lamps....
The desk, night stand, and floor lamp were clearly a set that I just thought were gorgeous... not really loud or ornate, but just quietly beautiful.

And then the bathroom had some abstract art, a framed mirror, AND this super-cool wallpaper... it was like pointillist art. (Kinda reminded me of this Martha Stewart tutorial for making pointillist china...)

Mr. Crafty Scientist loved this art print, but I couldn't get a great photo because we never had great lighting for photos and the glass made it all impossible.

This little corner of the room was just my favorite though... wish I had better pictures, but we were there for only two seconds and it was mostly rainy while we were there so the lighting was not working with me.

However, the best part of the room...

This was all the Durham Hilton which is puppy friendly! (And our puppies were very friendly to all... and no, no one is paying me to say this, I just wish they were)!

And now for some gorgeous scenery from the Duke campus (the white coat ceremony took place at the chapel - the crown jewel of the campus in many ways)!

The outside of the chapel just before the ceremony... you might have seen this one on Instagram

The chapel from far away...

And the chapel just after the ceremony - another Instagram post!

There you have it - a quick trip to Durham, NC for lots of design inspiration and gothic architecture!

I'll be sharing at some fun parties...

Color Blocked Planters

After I saw these ADORABLE color blocked planters that Chelsea at Making Home Base made, I knew I had to make some of my own! (By the way, if you haven't checked out Chelsea's blog, you  should do that immediately - she has some awesome projects!)

This is the epic adventure of my attempts to paint these planters... or the first part, anyways. I also gave a makeover to a strawberry terra cotta planter, but to avoid picture overload, I'll save that for a future post.

Supplies
  • Terra Cotta Planters
  • Spray Paint
  • Painter's Tape
  • Drop Cloth
  • Terra Cotta Trays for Planters
  • Clear Acrylic Spray
  • Plants + Soil + Labels

Instructions
I started out trying to paint the two regular terra cotta planters. I was going for some combinations of blue and white on each with some spray paint from my stash. I spray painted them all white at first to make sure there was a solid base coat (Rust-o-leum Painter's Touch White - Flat) and because I wasn't sure how much paint the terra cotta would absorb so I started out that way. It also helped keep the colors fairly true to the labels for those brands. [I'll tell you the paint color I used for most of this, but there are some I forgot to photograph and have since made it to the trash... oops!]

I taped off one pot so that the top 1/3 was covered (and remained the white base coat) and then sprayed the pots a navy blue color (Krylon in Oxford Blue - Gloss).

Unfortunately, this navy paint just didn't work very well (this was Krylon in Oxford Blue - Gloss). No idea why or what went wrong... so this ended up getting covered with a lighter sky blue.

I used a couple of coats and then removed my tape and taped off the other half of the pot and sprayed that with a different blue - this one with more of a purple tinge. I gave it a couple coats of that color and then removed the tape. I then sprayed it all with a clear acrylic protectant/coating/topcoat to protect the paint.

Then, I used some light green spray paint to color the tray for this planter and a light blue for the other planter's tray and sealed that too (the tray on the left is Krylon Celery - Gloss and the one on the right is Krylon Island Splash - Gloss)....

Then I just added some Rosemary and voila!

There was some area that didn't end up perfect - some exposed white here - but I was okay with that imperfection on these and mostly just glad that the weird navy paint hadn't ruined this planter and it appears mostly smooth.

I grabbed the next planter that already had the white base coat on it and taped off the bottom 1/4 of that pot and grabbed my teal spray paint and covered it... this color is Rust-o-leum's Jade.

Then, I removed the tape and used the acrylic spray on this one too.

Add the light blue tray, some soil and Sage (or maybe Thyme? Good thing they're labeled...) and voila!

Mr. Crafty Scientist wanted me to paint some more trays for other planters we already owned so those got light blue and a blueberry color on them (as well as the clear acrylic).

I was pretty pleased with these and decided to give the strawberry planter a makeover too - more about that soon! For now, I'm sharing this post at some of my favorite parties...

July 4th Display

I showed you guys the {Paint Chip} Stars and Stripes project that I mentioned was part of a little holiday display in the house... unfortunately, I still don't have perfect photos, but I still wanted to share this with you guys. I've been really wanting to do some holiday decorating/displays in the house and this is my first one!

You can see that the middle of the display is the painted striped frame with the paint chip stars inside
To the right is a simple black frame (I think it's a dollar store find) with this awesome free printable from Simple Crafter. LOVE her printables!

And lastly, we have the ribbon and paper flower pomanders... basically, styrofoam balls with straight pins that hold either small loops of ribbon in place or flowers made using a paper punch and some beads. I've made a lot for various projects (they're so mindlessly fun... I may have a sickness) and hopefully showing you some here will force me to actually take some good pictures and post a longer tutorial... anyways, I just grabbed some red, white, and blue ones and put them in a large vase.

I also added a ribbon around the edge to make it look fancy. I just cut it to the length I needed to wrap around once, burned the edges to prevent fraying, and attached some sticky velcro dots to each side.

And ta da - my first holiday display! (Poor lighting and all!)

I'm linking up to some of my favorite parties!
